Since the beginning of 2025, stricter requirements have been in force under the amended F-Gas Regulation. As a result, manufacturers of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment are actively redesigning their product portfolios in order to place environmentally friendly devices on the market that comply with the applicable requirements.
The solutions chosen by the major manufacturers can vary greatly. Some have opted to switch to refrigerants such as propane (R290 – GWP 3), propene (R1270 – GWP 2) or isobutane (R600a – GWP 3). These refrigerants are very environmentally friendly and belong to safety group A3, which means that they are highly flammable. This makes handling the corresponding systems much more complex in terms of design, installation, and maintenance, and there are many regulations and safety aspects to consider.
The refrigerantCO2(R744) is in safety group A1, meaning it is non-flammable and non-toxic. Nevertheless, handling carbon dioxide requires caution, as depending on its concentration, it can have a suffocating effect and cannot be detected by smell, color, or taste.
