Valve Solutions Tailored to Your Application

Not every machine or process can be designed effectively around an existing valve. The medium, operating conditions, material, actuation method, or installation situation may impose requirements that a standard design cannot adequately meet.

This is exactly where we at RSG come in. We develop custom valves and client-specific valve solutions based on our many years of experience in industrial valve technology. A custom solution does not necessarily mean that every component has to be developed from scratch.

Our modular system allows us to build on proven valve designs, combine components as needed, and adapt existing designs to specific requirements. If this approach is not sufficient, it can lead to the development of more advanced custom valves.

From plastic valves to metal valves and coaxial valves, to control valves and refrigeration valves, we offer a broad technical range for various media and industrial applications.

Custom valves meet requirements that fall outside the standard specifications

Anyone looking for custom valves usually has a good reason for doing so.

Perhaps the available installation space is limited. The medium places special demands on the housing or seals. The desired actuation mechanism is not compatible with the existing valve. Or a standard product may meet some of the requirements but cannot be meaningfully integrated into the existing design.

This presents a critical decision for designers, plant engineers, and technical buyers: Should they continue searching for a standard valve that somehow fits the application, or should the valve be specifically designed for the application?

Typical questions regarding custom valves include:

  • Medium and Media Compatibility
  • Operating Conditions
  • Material of the valve housing
  • Seal Materials
  • type of operation
  • Valve Type
  • available installation space
  • Connection and Integration
  • Desired valve function
  • Requirements of the respective machine or system
  • Subsequent mass production and logistics

Added to this is the question of just how far a customization actually needs to go. Not every deviation from the standard justifies a completely new development.

That is why we will first examine the specific problem statement.

Custom valve solutions, from customization to specialty valves

Our approach doesn't start with the question of which product we want to sell. What matters most is what function the valve must perform in your application.

To achieve this, we draw on our valve product line and our modular system. Existing components and design principles form a technical foundation from which various variants can be derived.

Depending on the application, a custom valve solution can therefore be developed at various levels.

An existing valve design can be adapted to the application. Different materials and actuation types can be considered. It is also possible to determine which valve technology is best suited for the medium being used and the required function.

If such a configuration is not sufficient, we go beyond simply adapting existing solutions and develop custom valves tailored to the specific application.

Our product portfolio provides a broad foundation for this. Among other things, we specialize in plastic valves, metal valves, coaxial valves, control valves, and PriWO refrigeration valves, as well as other types of valves.

This means that when developing a custom valve, we don't necessarily have to start from scratch.

Custom Valves with Benefits for Design and Purchasing

A custom valve is a good choice when it provides a better solution to a specific technical or economic problem than a standard, unmodified product.

This can offer you a significant advantage: Your machine doesn't have to be designed around the valve. Instead, we determine how the valve technology can be best integrated into your application.

This can be particularly relevant in cases of limited installation space, special media, or non-standard requirements regarding materials and operation.

Our modular approach offers additional benefits:

  • Use of proven valve designs as a technical foundation
  • Customized modifications instead of unnecessary complete redesigns
  • A variety of valve technologies from a single source
  • Selection of Suitable Housing and Valve Materials
  • Different operating principles
  • Support for Technical Valve Design
  • Design with 3D CAD
  • Manufacturing at the German facility
  • Support ranging from individual orders to mass production
  • Customized logistics models and framework agreements

This last point is particularly important for mass-produced products. The technical solution alone is not enough if a valve is later needed on a regular basis for machines or systems.

That is why we consider not only development, but also manufacturing, availability, and procurement.

Special Valves and Custom Valve Solutions in Typical Project Scenarios

The requirements for specialty valves vary considerably. For this reason, we have deliberately chosen not to make general promises here, but instead to highlight typical technical situations in which a custom valve solution may be appropriate.

For example, a mechanical engineer is developing a new machine module. The available installation space is fixed, and the medium, valve function, and actuation must all be taken into account. Instead of modifying the design retroactively to accommodate an available standard valve, the engineer can determine whether an existing valve base can be adapted.

Another application scenario arises in chemical engineering. In this context, the valve’s function alone may not be the decisive factor. The choice of material must also be suitable for the medium being used. For example, RSG offers plastic valves in PVC, PTFE, PVDF, and PP. In the area of metal valves, different metallic materials are used depending on the product.

The specific requirements in refrigeration technology can be determined by factors such as the refrigerant used, the system’s pressure range, the installation space, and much more. Our servo-controlled PriWO refrigeration valves offer excellent solutions to your challenges, and our dedicated team looks forward to working with you to develop the right solution.

The key point remains the same in all cases: First consider the application, then determine the valve solution.

Custom valve design instead of selecting valves from a catalog

When designing a valve for a specific application, it is not enough to simply compare the nominal diameter and the connection type.

The valve is part of a system. Therefore, the operating conditions must be considered as a whole.

Which fluid or gas is being controlled? Which materials come into contact with the medium? What valve function is required? How should the valve be actuated? What design constraints exist within the machine?

Based on this information, it becomes clear which valve technology is the best starting point.

Our modular system plays an important role in this regard. We can draw on existing solutions, components, and experience from various valve groups and apply them to new requirements.

This reduces the need to build an entirely new technical foundation for every customer-specific task.

At the same time, we rely on a custom solution there whenever a configuration using existing components is not sufficient.

This distinction is crucial for us. “Customized” does not automatically mean “completely new.” A good customized valve solution meets the application’s requirements without introducing unnecessary technical complexity.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Valves, Special-Purpose Valves, and Valve Design

A custom valve becomes a viable option when available standard designs cannot adequately meet key requirements. This may pertain, for example, to material selection, actuation, valve function, media compatibility, or structural integration. However, this does not necessarily mean a completely new design is required. We first examine whether an existing valve design can be adapted. Only when this approach is technically insufficient does a more extensive custom solution become relevant.

For the technical evaluation, information regarding the application is particularly important. This includes the medium being used, the operating conditions, the required valve function, and design specifications. Requirements regarding materials, actuation, or installation conditions can also play an important role. The more specific this information is, the more precisely we can assess which existing valve technology is a viable starting point and where adjustments are necessary.

No. This is precisely where one of the advantages of our modular system lies. Depending on the application, we can draw on existing valve designs and components to develop a customer-specific configuration. Therefore, a completely new design is not required for every deviation from the standard. However, if the technical requirements cannot be reasonably met using existing designs, it may be necessary to develop a more advanced custom valve.

Our existing product portfolio includes various valve technologies. These include plastic valves, metal valves, coaxial valves, control valves, and PriWO refrigeration valves, as well as other fittings. Which product group provides the right technical foundation for a customized solution depends on the specific application. That is why we do not base our decision solely on a general product designation, but first consider the function, medium, and operating conditions.

That depends on the specific valve group and application. Our product portfolio includes, among other materials, various types of stainless steel and brass, as well as plastics such as PVC, PTFE, PVDF, and PP. The selection of a material should be based on the actual operating conditions and the medium being used. Not every material is suitable for every medium and every valve design. Therefore, the choice of material is part of the technical design process and should not be left until the final product selection.

Our current product portfolio includes valves for a variety of aggressive and corrosive media. In such applications in particular, the materials in contact with the medium and the specific design principle must be carefully considered. Depending on the application, for example, plastic solutions made of PTFE, PVDF, PVC, or PP—or suitable metallic materials—may be appropriate. However, the specific suitability can only be assessed based on the medium and the operating conditions.

Yes. Machine and plant manufacturers, in particular, often require specific valve variants not just once, but on a recurring basis for their own products. In this case, in addition to the technical design, future supply also plays a role. RSG has its own manufacturing facilities, warehousing, and ERP-supported processes. In addition, customized logistics models and framework agreements can be arranged. This allows a customer-specific valve solution to be integrated into a recurring procurement process.

In practice, these terms are often used interchangeably. However, we see an important difference in the potential scope of development. A custom valve can be created simply by specifically adapting or configuring an existing valve solution. A special-purpose valve goes a step further when the application requirements cannot be adequately met with existing variants and components. A technical evaluation of the application determines which approach makes sense.

The installation situation can be a key component of a customer-specific project. In mechanical engineering in particular, components often have only a defined installation space available. For this reason, design integration should be considered as early as possible. Our work with 3D CAD supports technical design and coordination. Whether and to what extent a specific adaptation is possible depends on the specific valve type and other operational requirements.

A modular system provides a technical foundation that bridges the gap between an unmodified standard product and a completely new design. Existing valve designs and components can be combined or adapted to meet new requirements. This makes it possible to first assess how much custom design is actually necessary. This is particularly beneficial for the customer because the technical solution can build on existing valve expertise, rather than starting from scratch for every project.
